Engineering and Maintenance Manager

The Company
Large and successful Food Manufacturer in Christchurch who are in the process of building their in-house Engineering and Maintenance team.


Role Description

In the first instance the Engineering and Maintenance Manager will be very much a doer, so you will be a people manager, budget manager, and manage the relationship with consulting project engineers, plus carry out project execution.

Over time you will build a whole asset care strategy for the main Christchurch based plant, and another plant site too.

The Day to Day
Small Engineering Projects: You will be dealing with small projects, with external consultants and contractors, and working with the Production Managers to deploy those in the plant. 

Maintenance Processes & Systems: you will be developing the maintenance strategy, processes, and systems that your team is going to use and operate to.

Maintenance & Engineering:
you will be running the maintenance and engineering to improve the performance of the plant, so looking at improving reliability, getting standards put in place, problem solving with key pieces of equipment that are down etc.

A Player/Coach: You will be a player coach so to speak, so doing your own work balanced with managing others. The company want someone with real positivity and willingness to grow themselves who will also develop the people in their team, coaching a lot, and bringing out the best in others.

Maintenance Methodology and Continuous Improvement: This company have external consultants who are advising them on maintenance best practices, and continuous improvement. Informed by this, you will drive strategy and implementation of these two key areas.


About You

Ideal Background: Maintenance Manager background, reliability engineering, maintenance planning and scheduling at a senior level, and have led a team of 6 to 8 people or more.

Qualifications: Mechanical or Electrical, and either Degree or Trade background will be considered.

Relevant Machinery Experience: Conveyors, Multivac’s, multi-head weighers, check weighers, metal detectors, packaging and packing equipment, palletisers etc.

Must Have Experience

  • Leadership of a maintenance and engineering team.
  • Systems and Processes deployment
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Plant Reliability

Nice to Have Experience

  • Food Experience or an attitude to learn how to work in this environment.
  • Some exposure to automating processes
  • Exposure to engineering projects.
  • Continuous Improvement experience, e.g., Six Sigma, LEAN
  • Safety Culture and Systems
