Firmware Engineer (Embedded Electronics)

Is this you?
We are looking for a Firmware Engineer, ideally from an Embedded Electronics background who also understands electronics hardware as you will be working with a Hardware Engineer but have a Firmware focus yourself technically.

The Company
This company specialises in the on-going development and refinement of medical alarms and nurse call / data systems that go into hospitals and aged care facilities. So your product engineering will be improving quality of life for people.

The company site in Lower Hutt includes both office space upstairs and product testing and assembly downstairs too. You will join about 15 people who work across software and hardware engineering design, product testing and assembly, sales, and product support.

The company is entering a phase of growth across both New Zealand and Australia.

Why this company and role?

This role will suit someone who wants to be a Firmware Engineer, or a Firmware Engineer looking to step up into also being an R&D Manager of 1 to 2 other engineers in future.

This is the sort of company and job where your ideas will be heard and can be implemented. In a small company like this with a grass roots/No. 8 Wiry culture, you can simply chat with top level management, have ‘where to’ discussions on a new product idea and be given license to initiate it, and then work with production to make it happen. So this is not a corporate, you will feel invested and involved in R&D initiatives, and the CEO is passionate about innovation and coming up with better ways of doing things.

This is a 40 hour per week, permanent, and salaried role with the standard 3% Kiwisaver on top of this. Overtime is not typically needed, and you can have flexible start and finish times.

What you will be doing

Working closely with a Hardware Engineer, you will be primarily developing hardware and software. The role covers both hardware and software but is mostly focused on the software side.

Your clients will be a major source of product changes so you will talk with them to find out what they need and translate this into workable Hardware and Software specifications.

You will work on the whole product development lifecycle including concept design, prototyping, detailed design, product testing, and manufacturing/assembly.

You will develop and document: new firmware, updates, fix any bugs, and add new features.

Your Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience of embedded software development for Microcontrollers
  • Electronics Hardware and Software Design experience
  • C, C++, Python, and JavaScript
  • Embedded Linux platforms
  • Windows and Linux development environments
  • Source Code Control
  • Unit Testing and Integration Testing
  • Debugging with a Multi-meter, Oscilloscope, and Custom Hardware
  • Strong Communication and Documentation skills
  • Basic working knowledge of Docker, REST API, and MQTT
  • PCB manufacturing experience is ideal
