Sales/Application Engineer

An established and highly respected engineering business with a strong footprint in the Canterbury region is seeking a technically capable and commercially minded Sales/Application Engineer to join their team. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a varied role that spans design, client engagement, quoting, and commissioning — all while working with some of New Zealand’s most critical industries.

This privately owned business provides end-to-end hydraulic systems solutions, from component sales and technical advice through to full system design and commissioning. They service a wide range of industries, including agriculture, power generation, forestry, transport, manufacturing, and marine. Known for delivering quality, reliability, and innovation, they are involved in several high-profile projects both locally and internationally.

The Role
You’ll play a key part in supporting existing customers, identifying new opportunities, and managing the full lifecycle of technical projects — from enquiry and design through to installation and after-sales support. The role includes both office-based and field-based work, with regular travel across the region and occasional overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily technical support via phone, email, and over-the-counter
  • Manage projects from design and quoting through to commissioning
  • Prepare detailed hydraulic circuit designs and CAD drawings
  • Prepare accurate, well-documented quotations and tenders
  • Conduct client visits to build relationships and identify sales opportunities
  • Assist with project planning, documentation, and health and safety requirements
  • Liaise with internal teams to ensure timely delivery of solutions

About You

  • You have a solid technical understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical systems
  • You’re experienced in a technical sales, application engineering, or customer support role
  • You’re confident producing CAD drawings and hydraulic schematics
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • You’re commercially aware, customer-focused, and solutions-oriented
  • Experience with PLCs, control systems, or electronics would be an advantage
  • You’re organised, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
