Environmental Technician
West Coast Waikato. Remote Location, 9 day fortnight with accommodation provided
Join a unique coastal mining operation with a major environmental footprint and the scope to make a meaningful difference. This newly created role supports site-wide environmental management, water quality compliance, native rehabilitation work, and ecological monitoring across a large and dynamic operation.
Working closely with the HSE Manager, you’ll take ownership of the site-based environmental tasks. This position suits someone who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, water sampling, stream monitoring, native planting, and practical environmental problem solving in an outdoor environment. This is a remote, coastal site with a strong and diverse community. Respect, good communication, and relationship-building are essential. Site access requires 4WD driving, comfort off-road, and frequent fieldwork in all weather conditions.
The Role
Key responsibilities include:
Water Quality Management
- Undertake drinking water sampling and analysis twice weekly, maintaining strict compliance with drinking water standards.
- Complete stormwater and surface water sampling across multiple streams.
- Maintain sampling schedules (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, and 3-yearly), ensuring zero lapses in statutory requirements.
- Manage potable water and wastewater treatment monitoring, record-keeping, and reporting.
- Use basic laboratory equipment, prescribe tests, and manage chain-of-custody processes for external labs.
Environmental Monitoring & Reporting
- Assist with stream life monitoring, fish passage checks and ecological observations.
- Support external consultants conducting ecological studies (bats, birds, macroinvertebrates, habitat surveys).
- Maintain environmental records, update datasets, and produce clear reports using Excel and Word.
- Support consent compliance reporting, including erosion, runoff, and discharge monitoring.
Land Rehabilitation & Nursery Work
- Support dune rehabilitation and dust mitigation efforts through re-vegetation of disturbed areas.
- Assist in operating and improving the on-site native nursery (seed raising, propagation, plant care).
- Coordinate planting programmes-grasses, flaxes, manuka, and other native species.
General Site Environmental Support
- Provide environmental advice to operations teams.
- Use RT radios and 4WD vehicles to move around site safely.
- Build and maintain respectful relationships with the local community and Iwi representatives.
- Contribute to a high-quality environmental culture on site.
About You
We’re looking for someone practical, organised, and happy working outdoors. You will have:
- Tertiary study in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Earth Sciences, Aquaculture-or equivalent experience.
- Ability to understand compliance documents, schedules, sampling plans, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong communication skills, especially when engaging with diverse cultural groups.
- Solid Excel/Word capability and confidence with numbers.
- Fieldwork experience in sampling, environmental monitoring, or outdoor-based science (mining, quarrying, forestry, aquaculture, consultancy, or similar).
- Confidence driving off-road in a 4WD (or willingness to learn).
- A proactive and disciplined approach to maintaining strict sampling schedules.
Why Apply?
- $90 – 100K+. Accommodation provided + southern cross medical insurance
- 9 Day fortnight [Mon- Fri, Mon – Thurs] – 07:00 – 17:30
- Beautiful remote Waikato Coastal location
- A role where improvements are genuinely possible-across water systems, rehab methods, and monitoring.
- Hands-on, varied fieldwork balanced with meaningful environmental and community engagement.
- A supportive HSE Manager who will mentor you and transition more responsibility your way over time.
- A position with room to grow into broader environmental leadership
