Process Engineer

|Industrial & Energy - Chemical Process|Canterbury

A specialist engineering and project delivery company working across New Zealand’s dairy and food and beverage sector, with its head office in the North Island, is looking to establish a permanent Canterbury-based team. They’re seeking Process Engineers at both Senior and Intermediate level to join this new team in Christchurch, taking ownership of process engineering projects across the South Island’s dairy sector.

Role Overview
This is a project management and delivery focussed role. You’ll be working on South Island dairy projects with a particular emphasis on Canterbury. You’ll take existing dairy processes (process optimisation, capacity expansion and plant modifications) and work through detailed engineering, design development and costing, right through to commissioning. Project management is a significant part of the role – at Senior level this means some business development, mobilising contractors, setting clear targets and troubleshooting, while at Intermediate level you’ll build toward this under the guidance of more experienced engineers.

The company has delivered projects across the South Island for a number of years and is building a genuine Canterbury-based presence, rather than continuing to resource these projects from the North Island.
Projects range in scale, with some up to $10 million in value. Smaller projects under $1 million are typically run autonomously by one engineer end-to-end; larger projects are supported by additional project engineering and construction management resource as they scale.

Responsibilities

  • Take process concepts through detailed engineering, design development and costing
  • Manage or support project delivery from scoping through to commissioning, depending on experience level
  • Mobilise and direct contractors, setting clear deliverables and timeframes
  • Troubleshoot technical and delivery issues as projects progress
  • Support tender and pricing work, fleshing out engineering scope and cost estimates
  • Senior candidates will provide technical mentoring to less experienced engineers on the team

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree-qualified engineer with a chemical or process engineering background (strongly preferred over mechanical)
  • Process engineering experience at either Senior or Intermediate level, ideally within dairy, food and beverage, or a closely transferable industry
  • Senior candidates: proven experience taking projects from concept through to commissioning with minimal oversight
  • Intermediate candidates: some process engineering delivery experience, with willingness to develop toward independent project delivery
  • Exposure to process fundamentals such as chemical dosing, chemical recovery and heat recovery
  • Comfortable working as part of a small, developing Canterbury team
