Process Engineer
Process Engineer – Industrial Refrigeration Design & Delivery
A well established, privately owned New Zealand engineering business is looking for a Process Engineer to join its project delivery team, working on critical temperature control systems for some of New Zealand’s largest food and dairy operators.
The role
Our client designs, installs and services critical refrigeration systems for food, dairy and other process customers across New Zealand. The business has a strong track record of growth and innovation, and is adding process engineering capability to support its growing project pipeline.
The refrigeration design team is experienced and does not need help with the refrigeration system design itself. As Process Engineer, you will understand how that system fits into the customer’s wider process, and carry that understanding through from design into the field, so the finished install actually works the way it was intended to on site. This role sits between the North and South Island engineering teams, working closely with experienced refrigeration design engineers, wider engineering teams and the client. Base location is flexible, with a preference for Christchurch, then Auckland. You’ll predominantly be office based, but travel to site is required from time to time with commissioning, though it is not the dominant part of the role. What you’ll bring
- Qualified process, chemical or mechanical engineer, ideally with exposure to refrigeration or comparable process plant
- Strong grounding in thermodynamics, heat and mass balance and system design fundamentals
- Comfortable working through detailed calculations and translating them into a workable design
- Experience with CAD packages such as Inventor or Revit, and estimating or pricing software, is an advantage
- A genuine interest in learning refrigeration systems – deep prior experience isn’t required, the team will bring you up to speed
- Based in New Zealand with a solid understanding of how NZ businesses and sites operate
- Practical and down to earth, comfortable taking ownership of a project rather than clocking strict hours
Responsibilities
- Work alongside the refrigeration design engineers to make sure each system design accounts for the customer’s actual process, not just the refrigeration plant itself
- Own the process engineering maths and system design input on each project
- Project manage designs through to commissioning, staying close to procurement, contractors and the customer so nothing gets lost between design and site
- Get out to site during install and commissioning to check the design is landing as intended, and troubleshoot where it isn’t
- Contribute to detailed design where required, using the business’s CAD tools
- Work with natural refrigerants (ammonia, CO2, propane and similar)
