The Opportunity: Our client is a global leader in the animal health industry. They are seeking an experienced Quality Control (QC) Manager to oversee their QC laboratory operations, based in the Hutt Valley, Wellington. This role ensures their testing programs and release processes meet the highest standards of GMP compliance, regulatory requirements, and corporate quality assurance — ultimately supporting the release of safe, effective animal health products to global markets.

As QC Manager, you will manage the delivery of compliant, on-time, and accurate laboratory testing, essential for production and product release. The scope spans chemistry, immunology, microbiology, sterile support services, inwards goods, and outsourced contract laboratories for chemical and microbiological testing.  

Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the QC function within Quality Operations, managing routine and non-routine testing (e.g., reagent validations, packaging changes)
  • Ensuring systems are in place for timely and accurate testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods
  • Reviewing, interpreting, and approving test data; ensuring GMP-compliant documentation
  • Overseeing method validation, equipment qualification, and technology transfer from other sites
  • Managing external testing laboratories and conducting supplier audits
  • Maintaining compliance with GMP, corporate standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Supporting product registration with regulatory test data and participating in internal/external audits
  • Ensuring only compliant raw materials, packaging, and third-party products are released, or appropriately quarantined/rejected
  • Driving continuous improvement, cost-efficiency, and process optimization
  • Developing and supporting your team through hiring, training, performance reviews, and structured development planning
  • Taking ownership of laboratory safety, incident resolution, hazard management, and safety meeting participation

You, the Candidate: Our client is in need of a proven laboratory leader, bringing expertise from multidisciplinary environments. Knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacture would be highly beneficial.

The successful candidate will also possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Tertiary qualification in chemistry, biological science, or related discipline
  • 10+ years in a multidisciplinary testing laboratory
  • 5+ years’ experience in a QC Laboratory Manager role
  • Strong knowledge of GMP, GLP, ISO 17025, with proven success in audit environments
  • Experience in method validation, equipment qualification, and computerized systems (highly desirable)
  • A strategic thinker who can balance compliance, operations, and people leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, forecast resources, and deliver cross-functional projects
