THE OPPORTUNITY
If you’re an experienced Industrial Electrician who enjoys fault-finding, keeping machinery running and getting stuck into a bit of everything, this could be worth a look.

We’re looking for a Maintenance Electrician to join an established manufacturing operation in New Plymouth. You’ll be working with a small, close-knit maintenance team responsible for keeping a range of specialised production machinery running safely and efficiently.

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend every day chasing breakdowns. With a strong focus on preventative maintenance, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in equipment upgrades, new installations, plant improvements and electrical fault-finding across a varied manufacturing environment.

You’ll also have the support of an experienced team, with opportunities to develop your knowledge of PLCs, variable speed drives and other industrial control systems.

Your actual earnings will depend on your experience, rostered on-call weeks and overtime worked.

THE ROLE
Working alongside the Electrical Team Leader and wider maintenance team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out preventative maintenance inspections and servicing on production machinery and plant equipment.
  • Diagnosing electrical faults and responding to machinery breakdowns.
  • Troubleshooting PLCs, electronic systems, variable speed drives and associated control equipment.
  • Using software and diagnostic tools to identify and resolve faults.
  • Supporting equipment upgrades, plant modifications, new installations and decommissioning projects.
  • Assisting with instrumentation checks, calibration and verification activities.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records, work orders, parts usage and time entries through SAP.
  • Coordinating the sourcing and ordering of electrical parts and equipment.
  • Ensuring machinery, guarding and electrical safety systems meet required standards.
  • Working alongside mechanical fitters and production teams to improve equipment reliability and minimise downtime.
  • Participating in the electrical on-call roster and attending call-outs when required.

The focus is on proactive and preventative maintenance, with reactive breakdown work making up a smaller proportion of the workload. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to improvement projects rather than simply maintaining the status quo.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You’ll ideally bring:

  • An Electrical Trade Certificate and a current full practising licence.
  • Experience working as an Industrial Electrician in a manufacturing or similar industrial environment.
  • Strong electrical fault-finding skills and the confidence to diagnose and repair equipment independently.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance, machinery breakdowns and industrial electrical systems.
  • Good computer skills and the ability to work with maintenance management systems and technical software.
  • A sound understanding of electrical safety, machine guarding and safe working practices.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with maintenance colleagues, production operators and other stakeholders.

Experience with the following would be advantageous, but isn’t essential:

  • Siemens or Omron PLCs.
  • Variable speed drives (VSDs).
  • Industrial instrumentation, calibration and verification.
  • Industrial networking and control systems.
  • SAP or other computerised maintenance management systems.

You don’t need to be a PLC programming specialist. A solid industrial electrical foundation, good fault-finding ability and a willingness to learn are more important. Training and support are available to help you get up to speed with the site’s equipment and systems.

The site operates specialised, high-speed manufacturing equipment, so no two days are necessarily the same. You’ll need to be comfortable taking ownership of problems, working through faults logically and communicating with operators to get to the root cause.
