The Company
This company supplies, installs, and services a range of automated machinery for the post-harvest horticultural sector. Being a long established family owned kiwi business that has grown to cover New Zealand and Australia you will get the stability, brand, and product variety of big business combined with the family culture and tight knit team feel of working in this Tauranga office. You will be joining an incredibly good family business who look after their people.

Location:
The ideal location for this role is Tauranga. However, at a stretch if you are experienced and can hit the ground running this role could be based in Auckland or the Hawkes Bay.

Career Growth:
This is a company who are both happy to offer training and mentoring where needed so you continue to develop your career. Once you have hit your straps and grown your sales capacity the salary will grow too.

Stable Business: This a solid business that doesn’t have the peaks and troughs of some businesses, so the work stability is there for you.

Market Leaders: You will be joining a Company with strong market presence, so you will already have the customers there to talk to, and it is more about account managing those customers well to maintain this Company as the go-to machinery supply and service partner.

After Sales Service Point of Difference: A lot of machinery sales companies in this sector don’t have the same level of after-sales service teams of electro-mechanical technicians that you can offer your customers, so this will be an easy and valuable differentiator you can offer.

About You and The Opportunity

A few terms to describe your role are Account Manager, Trusted Advisor, Machinery Solutions Consultant.

Your Key Attributes

  1. We are looking for is someone who has a mix of technical and sales knowledge.

 or

  1. Someone who has technical knowledge and has the communication and people skills to be mentored into a sales role for technical machinery products. This could be a nice way to transition off the tools and trade a screwdriver for a laptop for you.

When I say technical, I am talking about machinery for the post-harvest fruit and vegetable markets, your customers will predominantly be packhouses. We are looking for someone with a technical background in machinery plus a mechanical or electrical technical background.

And when I say sales, given your customer base, we don’t want shiny shoes, we want someone with a pair of work boots, happy to rub shoulders with primary industry growers and packhouse owners.

You will be someone who can quickly learn and understand how various machinery operates and then delve into the technical aspects of this machinery with customers. You will sell off your product knowledge (once you have learnt it) and effectively communicate how these products will improve outcomes and ROI for your customers based on their unique processes.

You will need to be capable with Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF, and using MYOB to generate quotes and other documentation.

With Capital Equipment sales cycles can be quick but can more often take a long time to happen. So, you need to be someone happy with this and take a long term relationship building perspective.

There is not a strong ‘closing’ emphasis or pressure placed on you here, instead it will be to build relationships and take ownership of providing technical machinery solutions. From this approach the sales will come for you.

You do still need a bit of grit and tenacity to get out there and talk to people and make things happen, but this is a lower stress environment than some other sales industries have which could be attractive to you too.

Your Team
You’ll be well supported as this role is only available because of a high level promotion of the person previously in this role. So, he will still be there to introduce you to customers and hand over the reins.

You will have two other sales colleagues who sell the consumables for the machinery you will sell and one of the Directors also focuses on a key specialist product.

You will also regularly liaise with product suppliers too.

There is a range of machinery to sell but initially you won’t be thrown in the deep end, you will be taught how some of their high sales machines work and then slowly broaden out from there over time to learn and sell their other machinery. Given the person previously in this role is still in the business, he has said that he will still help with more technical work until you come up to speed.

Travel

You will be out and about on customer sites to build rapport with customers and to have those solution provider consultations. So, you do need to be open to travelling on average 1 week per month domestically. Max travel in a month could be 2 weeks, and in the busy season for about 3 months of the year in Autumn most customers will be too busy to see you, so you will get a reprieve.

You will get a full use vehicle, petrol card, phone, laptop, a company credit card, and have access to Corporate Traveller to assist you with flights and accommodation booking. So, you will be well set up for travel.

National Customer Base
Most of the travel is within the upper North Island growing regions by car (e.g. Northland, Tauranga, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne) with a couple of locations in the South Island: Nelson and Central Otago too.
