Mechanical Design Engineers

Two Mechanical Design Engineer Jobs!
1 Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with 5 to 10 year’s of relevant machinery design experience
2 Junior to Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer with at least 2 year’s post grad work experience

This Auckland based Company design, manufacture, and install Material Handling equipment for large manufacturers across a range of production sectors with a focus on Food & Beverage, and Dairy manufacturers in NZ and Australia.

1 You will be joining a team of 5 Mechanical Design Engineers with a diverse range of ages and experience with technical management from a Senior Design Engineer who is moving more into a Management role, creating space for another Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

2 The Company have been utilising contractors to manage overflow work for a while now and are now at the stage that a Junior to Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer is needed.

You will be in an open office with an attached workshop and assembly area where the machinery is assembled and tested prior to being shipped to a customer site.

Mechanical Design of machinery will make up 95% of the role.

Solidworks is used primarily for 3D designs and the subsequent drawing outputs (90%).
AutoCAD is used for some of their legacy equipment and for layouts (10%).

Machine design will typically involve their standard range of machinery and customising this to suit a client’s needs. For example, something as simple as a roller conveyor through to a robot head customised to the product it is handling e.g., bottles, boxes, pallets.

While you will interact with suppliers to get the right equipment at a good price, they do have dedicated someone who does the procurement so you don’t need to do this.

Their equipment will be integrated primarily into existing manufacturing plant environments. A minor part of the role will be site-based measure ups, and checking that installations are carried out correctly. This may sometimes require travel to site, but this role is generally only away from home a couple of times per year with trips up to 1 week in length.

This is a fulltime role, but the hours of work can be reasonably tailored to your situation. i.e., they have some people starting at 6:30 am, 7:30 am, and 8:30 am.

Typical Project Stages: Sales handover, layout preparation, site measurements (if not done by sales), basic design, hazard review and/or design review with the customer. Then detailed design (sometimes on-site),  once this is done, issuing fabrication work, and then interacting with the workshop regarding any fabrication questions. Finally, follow up with the automation team once testing starts to confirm the machine is performing as expected.

Does this sound like you?

  • Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering Degree (or similar)
  • Significant level of mechanical design and drafting of machinery
  • Can capably use Solidworks (or another 3D CAD package) & AutoCAD to design/draft manufacturing drawings
  • Material Handling, Food & Beverage, and Dairy equipment design experience
  • Attention to details
  • Above average verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use Excel and do relevant engineering calculations like for motor sizing, power, chain pull, and belt stretch on a conveyor etc.
  • You have a good handle on engineering principles
  • Know how to specify and size things like motors, and materials

This is an ideal role for someone seeking a dedicated Mechanical Design Engineering role alongside a team of like-minded people that enjoy mechanical design on real world plant-based materials handling machinery. Engineers will find this technically interesting work.

I would appreciate drawing examples as supplementary information as part of your application if available.
