Mechanical Design Engineering role with a real variety of projects: R&D, custom design-build, & product development!

Stable Engineering Company
See your designs come to life
Nel-SUN lifestyle location

Engineering What?
Think special purpose machinery/equipment right through to heavy vehicles and structures. No two days will be the same!

The bulk of your role will be in the design office, but you will also be out visiting clients at various projects stages like for site measurements, and at installation. A team pool vehicle is available for you to use for this.

You will also work in with tradesmen in the engineering workshop so that your designs can be translated well into reality.

The Design Team
You will be joining a friendly and receptive Design Team who are a mix of ages, career stages, and cultural mix.

Interests wise, the team are passionate outdoors people, often engaged with mountain biking, skiing, tramping etc.

Who will I report to? I have talked with the Mechanical Design Manager, and this is how he has been described to me.

  • Calm, easy to talk with, someone passionate about leading and mentoring people.
  • Loves design work, an open, and inquisitive person interested in what he’s doing – technically very good.

Sounds like a good manager to me!

What kinds of Projects?
You will be designing modifications to existing machinery, clean sheet design and build for a client with a designated budget, and then at the top end doing R&D with higher budgets, broad creativity, and aiming for a world beating product.

So, you will be professionally engaged and challenged here.

Full R&D
This is a rare opportunity to be involved in the full R&D product life cycle, including design & analysis of mechanical systems and parts, FEA, fabrication of prototypes, testing, refinement, product assembly & installation, full product commercialisation, and product support.

Manufacturing
Your designs will translate into the manufacturing side of the company, who will do one off, small run, or higher volume production runs of a product developed for: a client, as an internal company product, or as a product with IP shared between this company and their clients.

From Design to Reality
Many engineers like to see their designs go from CAD to reality, built before their eyes, and see their innovations making an impact for clients. You will get that here.

Project Variety?
A big tick. You will have a large mix of sectors and projects, across primary industries typically.

There are really strong sector growth areas here both regionally and nationally with some big funding being tapped into.

Company Culture?
There is a culture of learning here and a positive atmosphere. Nobody is higher than anyone else in the pecking order, instead this is a place where everyone pitches in to get a job done. You will get a family owned vibe, and there is freedom to try new things.

Established Clients & Research Institution Partners
This company has very established client relationships, so job stability and workflow are solid.

As the company partner with multiple research institutions, this will give you the opportunity to work on some very interesting and unique projects.

And having access to draw on some global experts in their respective fields should pique your interest too.

New Facility on the Horizon
By Christmas 2024 you will likely be working in a new purpose-built facility.

Lifestyle Location
Nelson is a good lifestyle region to pursue outdoor hobbies, and for a family it is a great place, with really good schools, and affordability relative to other similar sized regions. I live in Nelson so feel free to ask me any questions you have about the region.
