Project Engineer

CarbonScape is a New Zealand–based deep-tech start-up developing advanced carbon materials for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems globally. Working with international battery manufacturers and technology partners, CarbonScape is scaling a novel, patented process from pilot through to commercial deployment in a lean, high-accountability environment.
 
Strong partnerships with Tier 1 global battery companies are driving the need for increased capacity across CarbonScape’s technical programme delivery. As these programmes grow in scale and complexity, this Project Engineer role is an additional requirement to join the project team to support the increased delivery of engineering and technical projects.
 
The job.
As Project Engineer you will be responsible for owning the technical engineering outcomes for assigned projects, being involved in design development, equipment specification, procurement, installation support, commissioning, and associated documentation.
 
In particular, you will: 

  • Deliver engineering plant projects, modifications and upgrades from concept through commissioning; including factory acceptance testing and hand over to production
  • Undertake project administration and procurement logistics, including coordination with overseas vendors
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, equipment specifications and capture and apply lessons learned to improve future designs and project outcomes
  • Work closely with operations to ensure HSWE compliance during installation, commissioning, and trials

 The person.
As our Project Engineer you be a proven self-starter with:

  • Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Process, or related Engineering discipline
  • Experience delivering technically complex projects across laboratory, pilot, and industrial scales
  • Proven experience with equipment installation, commissioning, and factory acceptance testing
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work safely in an operating plant environment
  • Clear technical communication and documentation skills

 This role involves working with international partners, providing exposure to global programmes. Occasional work outside standard New Zealand business hours might be required.
