Industrial Electrician – Power Supply

This Southland industrial site operates and maintains a large-scale power supply network that supports a major continuous process operation. The Power Supply team looks after incoming grid supply, HV switchyard equipment, transformers, substations and site-wide electrical distribution, with a strong focus on safe operations, preventative maintenance and asset reliability.

The business offers a technically strong environment, structured training and a well-supported maintenance function, along with one of the better industrial packages in the Southland market.

About the Role
We’re recruiting Industrial Electricians to join the Power Supply team supporting the site’s incoming electrical supply and distribution assets.
This team is responsible for the maintenance, operation and reliability of the site’s power infrastructure, including HV switchyard equipment, transformers, substations and the wider distribution network. The work combines preventative maintenance, breakdown response and fault finding with support for switching activities and ongoing asset care.

There are two roster options within the team:

  • Days: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm. This is the maintenance team, focused on planned and breakdown work across the power supply assets.
  • Rotating: 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. These roles combine control room responsibilities with high voltage switching and maintenance support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planned and reactive maintenance across power supply assets
  • Fault finding and repair on HV switchgear, transformers and substation equipment
  • Inspection, servicing and condition monitoring of critical electrical infrastructure
  • Support high voltage switching activities and maintain operating competencies
  • Identify defects, raise notifications and complete work orders through the site maintenance systems
  • Work closely with operations and engineering teams on reliability improvements and defect elimination
  • Support safe isolation, permit and work management processes across critical electrical assets

Skills & Experience

  • Trade-qualified electrician with a New Zealand practising licence
  • Industrial electrical maintenance experience in heavy industry, manufacturing, utilities, generation or distribution
  • Strong fault-finding ability and confidence responding to breakdowns on critical plant
  • Experience working around HV systems, substations, transformers or power distribution equipment is highly desirable
  • Comfortable working within structured permit, isolation and work management systems
  • A practical, safety-focused and methodical approach to maintenance and troubleshooting

What’s on Offer

  • Base salary: Mid $80K to low $90K depending on experience
  • Rotating shift allowance: $21,400
  • Days allowance: $3,500
  • Bonus: Traditionally around 5% of base salary
  • Superannuation: 10% employer contribution on base salary, with a 4% employee contribution
  • Phone allowance: $990
  • Leave loading: After one year of service, taking two weeks annual leave provides an additional two weeks’ pay
  • Medical cover: Southern Cross Wellbeing One
  • Share scheme: Rio Tinto share scheme with matched shares after three years
  • Long service leave: Additional leave after 10 years
  • Relocation assistance where required

This is a good fit for an industrial electrician who enjoys working on critical electrical infrastructure rather than general production plant, and who wants to build deeper capability in HV equipment, substations and power distribution within a large industrial environment.
