Meet our Team: Maya Carpenter-Salvador
Who are you?
I’m a Recruitment Consultant at Technical Recruitment Solutions. I grew up living all around the Wellington region and studied a Bachelors of Communication at Massey in Wellington.
What do you do at Technical Recruitment Solutions?
I recruit for the Manufacturing, Science and Technology team. We recruit for technical roles in food, dairy, pharmaceuticals, and other manufacturing industries.
What do you do when you aren’t at work?
You’ll either find me out and about enjoying the company of my friends and family or holing up in a quiet corner with some chocolate and a good book.
What did you want to be growing up?
I used to want to be a veterinarian when I was younger (discovered I don’t quite have the guts for some of the more gruesome aspects of it) and then went and studied communications at Massey University taking a strong interest in Public Relations.
What is the best book you’ve ever read?
The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini
If you could give one piece of advice to job seekers, what would it be?
Tailor your CV and/or cover letter to the role you’re applying for. Read through the description thoroughly, tell us what experience and skills you have that are aligned specifically to that job description, pick out key words – techniques performed, instruments or equipment used, regulations you’re familiar with, daily tasks, personal achievements that you could apply to this company etc, and don’t be afraid to tell us areas you might lack in, it shows self-awareness.
If you could give one piece of advice to hiring managers, what would it be?
You can teach people new skills; you can’t teach them to have a great attitude and aptitude. If you’ve got someone with a great work ethic who’s willing to learn, I think that trumps having all the boxes ticked.
How do you think the industry you recruit for will change in the next five years?
I’m still early on in my recruitment career and learning about these industries, but I am definitely intrigued to see how technology and automation will impact the manufacturing space and what roles will eventually become obsolete.
