Job Advertisements for Construction Increase

, ,

The New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment reported last week that online job ads were up 9.2% this year compared to previous years, presenting good news to job seekers. Especially in construction.

The number of online job ads held steady in July when compared to the previous months, however, previous months have shown an increase on a year-over-year basis. Overall, the biggest increases on the job vacancy listings were in the construction and engineering industry (up 1.5%) and also in education and training (up 1.2%). Going down, the biggest decreases were in sales, retail, marketing and advertising (down 0.2%).

Despite claims that people need to be skilled to thrive in a modern labour market where automation is taking over, the largest increases in demand were for semi-skilled, unskilled and low-skilled workers. These increases are reflected through the increase of advertisements for occupations of machinery drivers (up 2.2 per cent) and labourers (up 1.8 per cent).

The reasons for this may sit in the fact that there are around 30,000 homes built each year in New Zealand. In the next six years there is said to be 200,000 homes built around New Zealand as quoted by Bill English. According to statistics New Zealand, in the year to 30th of June 2017 there were 30,453 homes consented around New Zealand. If this rate is maintained exactly over the next six years, 182,718 homes will be consented, 17,282 less than Mr English states. All of these facts point at the reason that demand for workers in the construction industry is so high.

Online vacancies were up across New Zealand, with the biggest increase in Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and the West Coast.

Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment concludes that “Overall, growth in vacancies is steady, while growth is strong for construction jobs,”
